detail from a work in progress
A little heron I made for a friend.
I need a better woodburning tool, preferably one with a less wobbly nib and a handle that doesn’t overheat & scorch my fingertips.

dude this thought invariably Fucks me Up. every crusty/pickled/stuffed/skeletonized whatnot in a natural history museum, while living, presumably went about its business with a comparable sense of urgency and self-importance to mine and now it’s there and i’m here and i have no idea how to process this profound connect/disconnect except to lean in very close to the glass and whisper “hi buddy. i see you.”
This week I made another trip to the fishery at Toomebridge and bought two live eels. I brought them to the riverbank and transferred them to a tank just long enough to take a few photographs before releasing them back into the lake.
I love these strange and beautiful creatures so very, very much.

So deeply disturbed by reports of abductions, torture & murders of gay men in Chechnya. The Rainbow Project here in Belfast organised a demonstration to show solidarity with LGBTQ people in Chechnya/Russia, and while I while I feel desperately ambivalent about these kinds of gestures that seem to make so little immediate difference, I remind myself that every act of resistance matters, and it starts with showing up. Gatherings like this forge bonds of community without which no meaningful progress is possible. This is how you build the machinery of change.
