This releases more heat, raising the pressure enough to counterbalance the gravitational collapse. Once all the hydrogen has been consumed (which happens more quickly in larger stars) the contraction begins again, and the according rise in temperature allows for the creation of still heavier elements (lithium, carbon, oxygen). However, the energy thereby released will not be enough to stabilise the star completely.
