This series was created over 2-3 years by gradually building up (and scraping off) layers of paint using brushes, palette knives and rags. The aim of each piece was to create a kind of diary consisting only of colour and texture, evoking changing moods or a changing landscape. I wanted the work to show its history, like the workings of a mathematical problem. The intent was to generate a kind of document of creative and destructive processes unfolding over time.
These paintings are an attempt to describe the state of sensory overload that sometimes presages a depressive episode. Before the numbness sets in, the experience of moving through the world takes on an almost unbearable intensity; sounds and colours are harsh and jangling.
